Carter Starocci’s Weighty Journey: From 174 to 184 and the Hilarious Struggles of Cutting Weight

Published

on

Carter Starocci, the wrestling wizard from Penn State, has decided to take his talents up a weight class, jumping from 174 to 184 pounds. It’s like moving from a cozy studio apartment to a spacious two-bedroom—sure, there’s more room, but now you have to deal with the extra rent! Starocci, who has already made history by winning four NCAA titles, is now facing the daunting task of shedding those pesky pounds each week. It’s a classic case of ‘the grass is always greener’—or in this case, ‘the weight class is always heavier.’

As he embarks on this new chapter, Starocci humorously notes that cutting weight is a bit like trying to fit into your favorite pair of jeans after the holidays—challenging and often leads to a few tears. He’s been battling a midseason illness and a knee injury, which sounds like the plot of a wrestling-themed soap opera. But fear not, our hero is determined to adapt and overcome, proving that even when life throws you a curveball (or a heavy weight class), you can still come out on top.

In the world of wrestling, where every ounce counts, Starocci’s journey is a reminder that sometimes you have to let your body do its thing. He’s learned to embrace the weight cut, saying, ‘You don’t get your hand raised from making weight.’ So, as he prepares for his fifth NCAA title, let’s cheer him on and hope he finds the right balance between strength and energy—because nobody wants to see a champion fainting in the ring! Ella Gaitan gets the weekly hardware Penn State’s offense dared the Big Ten to hand over

Penn State field hockey has apparently reached the stage of the season where it can beat a ranked opponent, collect a conference award, and still look mildly offended that anyone took this long to notice. Junior forward Ella Gaitan was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week after doing the rude thing of scoring both goals in the Nittany Lions’ 2-1 win over No. 18 Michigan, which is a pretty efficient way to introduce yourself to the league if your goal is maximum damage and minimum small talk.

The math was simple and slightly humiliating for Michigan: Gaitan opened the scoring off a penalty corner, then came back in the third quarter and doubled the lead before the Wolverines could finish reorganizing their dignity. That gave her a new single-season high with 11 goals, which is the kind of number that makes opposing defenders start checking the roster like they’ve been assigned to a very unpleasant science experiment. Penn State’s seventh straight win also pushed the Nittany Lions to 10 victories on the year, their first double-digit season since 2022, so the award feels less like a weekly honor and more like the Big Ten’s way of admitting Penn State has become the sort of team that shows up, scores twice, and leaves before the trapdoor closes.

Penn State volleyball rises in the rankings after a week of emotional damage control

Outside hitter Emmi Sellman pumps her fist in celebration during the Penn State women’s volleyball match against Tennessee on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2026 at Rec Hall in University Park, Pa.

Penn State women’s volleyball somehow managed to turn a split week into a promotion, which is basically the college sports version of getting two speeding tickets and still earning an upgrade on your rental car. The Nittany Lions landed at No. 16 in the latest AVCA poll after opening their West Coast swing with a five-set loss to UCLA and then responding the next day by politely dismantling USC in a 3-0 sweep. That’s the kind of week that makes rankings voters squint at their ballots and mutter, “Well, they did lose, but have you seen the kill numbers?”

Kennedy Martin did her best to keep the whole operation from collapsing, pouring in a season-high 25 kills against UCLA before following up with 10 more against USC, while Alexis Stuckey handed out 31 assists in the bounce-back win. It was a classic Penn State volleyball sequence: absorb one punch, step back into the ring with a colder stare, and remind everyone that a ranked team is still a ranked team even when the schedule tries to humble it. The real test comes next, with No. 10 Oregon and No. 18 Indiana waiting like two very annoyed bouncers at the end of the hallway. If Penn State keeps handling business like this, the rest of the Big Ten may need to start checking whether the rankings are being updated with a clipboard or a dartboard.

Boston College Makes Penn State’s Quarterback Room Even More Awkward With Will Wood Flip

Will Wood announcing his commitment flip to Boston College

Boston College pulled off the kind of recruiting win that makes a fan base feel like it just intercepted a screen pass and returned it for six. Four-star Massachusetts quarterback Will Wood, who had been committed to Penn State, announced that he is flipping to the Eagles and staying home to play for Bill O’Brien. That alone would be enough to sting State College, but the timing makes it feel even more brutal: Penn State’s weekend went sideways on the field, and then the recruiting dominoes started toppling like a bad third-quarter game plan.

Wood’s decision is the kind of local flip programs dream about and rival fans pretend not to notice until it’s already in the end zone. Boston College gets a talented quarterback, O’Brien gets a centerpiece recruit, and Penn State gets the unenviable task of explaining why a four-star passer in its own backyard suddenly decided the grass was greener in Chestnut Hill. Recruiting is always part sales pitch, part trust exercise, and part weather vane for momentum — and right now, the wind is blowing Boston College’s way. The simplest takeaway is also the most annoying one for Penn State: when the scoreboard gets ugly, the shopping gets harder. Meanwhile, BC just turned a promising weekend into a very loud receipt.
