Houston’s Houdini Act: Uzan’s Last-Second Layup Lifts Cougars Over Purdue

March Madness lived up to its name Friday night as the Houston Cougars pulled off a heart-stopping 62-60 win over the Purdue Boilermakers, thanks to a perfectly executed inbound play culminating in a Milos Uzan layup with just 0.9 seconds remaining.
Houston, holding a comfortable 56-46 lead with under eight minutes to play, suddenly found themselves in a scoring drought, managing only one field goal until Uzan’s decisive basket. The tension peaked when Purdue’s Camden Heide drained a clutch three-pointer, knotting the game at 60 with a mere 35 seconds on the clock.
Following a Houston timeout, the Cougars orchestrated a play that would make choreographers jealous. Uzan inbounded to Joseph Tugler, who immediately returned the favor with a bounce pass. Seizing the moment, the 6-foot-4 junior sliced through Purdue’s defense for an uncontested layup, leaving Boilermaker fans in stunned silence.
Purdue’s final attempt—a half-court heave by Braden Smith—fell short, sealing Houston’s ticket to the Elite Eight for the third time in five years. The Cougars (33-4) now boast the nation’s longest winning streak at 16 games and will face No. 2 seed Tennessee in the Midwest Region final on Sunday.

Penn State vs. Northwestern hype video

Penn State enters Evanston at 3-1, but the Lions aren’t exactly riding into battle untouched. After opening the season with three straight wins-including a 55-13 win over Buffalo-their first Big Ten test ended in a 24-20 loss to Wisconsin. The defense is still creating havoc, with eight takeaways through four games, but now the Lions leave Happy Valley needing to prove that one defeat didn’t crack the armor.
Waiting on the shores of Lake Michigan is a Northwestern team that has been a lot more dangerous than anyone should assume. The Wildcats opened 2-0, crushed Colorado 41-7, then went into the home of No. 5 Indiana and nearly pulled off the upset before falling 29-23. Now they return home for the first game ever at the new Ryan Field-and they already beat Penn State 22-21 last season. The Wildcats have their castle. The Lions are at the gates.
Friday night, the battle begins.
